Profession: Pastor’s wife for 40 years and mother of 5 sons. Grandmother of 9 grandchildren. (at the moment) I have been working as a Contract Compliance & Records Specialist for the Government for the past 9 years.
How long have you been on this weight loss journey? I didn’t have a weight problem until after the birth of my 5th son, Josh, at age 37.
Weight Loss/Inches: 33 lbs. and 22 inches and still losing! I started in LiveFit in March 2013 I went to one free class with my friend and I was hooked. I started Belly Blaster Meal Plan one week before Biggest Loser and lost 9 lbs. that week. Biggest Loser for 10 weeks and lost 15 lbs. and just completed Rock Your Jeans for 8 weeks and lost 9 lbs.
What was your “low point”? – At age 61, I decided that it was time to lose the baby weight. Seriously, I had been fussing with my Dr. about my blood sugar. I kept telling him my problem was I was too short and if he could stretch me I wouldn’t be overweight. He kept telling me that I could control it with diet and exercise but if I didn’t he would eventually have to put me on medication. Oh, I had tried the gamut of Fad Diets except for the Cookie Diet, the Cotton Ball Diet and the Fermented Soy Bean Diet (that one looked scary!) But the turning point came last year when I had the opportunity to see a girlfriend that I had not seen in 35 years. She had lost part of her leg to diabetes. I realized that I needed to make a decision while I still had a choice to change my lifestyle and get serious about my health. I decided to take charge of my health by making the right choices and developing a healthy lifestyle of eating and exercising.
How did you get started? My girlfriend, Debbie, and I had already joined the gym and were just beginning a new “diet”. Experiencing little progress, we decided to find a certified trainer/nutritionist. She did an assessment on us which included weight, measurements and our physical condition based on a series of exercises. Even though it had been 20+ years since I had been physically active, since the birth of my 4th child, I thought “I got this”. I was as deluded as the guy on TV trying to juggle chainsaws. I was mortified. I used muscles that I hadn’t used since I was 6 years old and some I didn’t even know existed! Afterwards, Debbie started talking to me about going with her to Boot Camp. She told me that I needed to go with her and started telling me about it. I told her she was nuts! Exercising OUTSIDE…I mean people could see us! Plus, I was worried about you know being….mature (another word for OLD). I was worried about not being able to do it because of my age and how out of shape I was. Why everyone thinks that they need to be “in shape” to start to work out is hilarious to me but we all do it! I told her I would TRY it basically just to humor her. So I went…
I was so impressed with the variety and intensity of the exercises of the class. I went and fell in love with the philosophy of LiveFIT, Adina, the coaches, the environment of encouragement, nutritional education, and camaraderie and fun! I thought this type of physical activity and challenge was gone forever from my life especially at my “mature age”. Adina has developed and provides an environment that participants of different levels of fitness as well as ages can participate in. This is possible because you start where you are to become the best that “you can be”. I benefit not only physically but spiritually, mentally, emotionally and socially. It is an environment that helps provide balance in my life.
What is your workout routine and eating plan? I had been going to the gym three times a week and began going to Boot Camp three times a week. I signed up for the Biggest Loser Challenge for 10 weeks in March 2013. One night during Adina’s class she incorporated some exercises that were from the TRX class using the bar and it was a fantastic workout. I loved it! After the Biggest Loser Challenge, I added the TRX class to my Boot Camp Schedule and dropped the gym to twice a week. I continued to add classes until I was going to 4 Boot Camp Classes and 1 TRX Class per week and once a week to the gym.
I love Boot Camp and the TRX Class. I was so afraid that I would not be successful at my age and how out of shape that I was. That is so untrue! Adina has set the environment for success. She and the coaches encourage, instruct, push, and modify workouts as needed. The success is dependent upon n and the work that I put into each class. I love the sweat and the fatigue after each class. It brings me a step closer to my goal. I feel so accomplished and am seeing so many results in stamina and loose clothing! I read somewhere a quote, “Stop waiting for things to happen! Go out and make them Happen!” Success is up to me no matter what age. It is dependent on what I put into it.
In March 2013, when I started on my commitment to a healthy lifestyle of eating and exercising I had decided that I never wanted to go on another “diet” again. I wanted this to be such a part of me that it is as natural to me as breathing. I was so ready and committed to take charge of my health and the quality of my life. I knew I had to teach my body to want the healthy foods again and not the junk it craved. When I became involved with LiveFIT classes such as boot camp and TRX, Adina and the other coaches were the missing pieces to help me achieve this part of my goal. Not only do they help me set the physical goals in my life, they also teach me so much about nutrition and changing our lifestyles for optimum health. They model it, too. They are examples of “clean eating” because it is a part of their lives.
I began with the Belly Blast which even though I only did for one week in the beginning it helped me start eating healthy clean foods. I lost 9 lbs. that week. The next week I signed up with my workout partner to do Biggest Loser for 10 weeks. I lost 15 lbs. during that challenge. The next challenge was Rock Your Jeans for 8 weeks. When I did Rock Your Jeans I thought I would do something different and decided not to weigh myself for the whole 8 weeks. I concentrated on my workouts and planning and logging of my meals on MyfitnessPal. When we had our weigh in, I was shocked that I had lost 9 lbs. It was fun not being a slave to the scale. I wanted to see how much of this was becoming a part of me and how much of it was motivated only by the scale. All of these challenges were great to be a part of because it helps keep me accountable and there was such great camaraderie with other ladies and it was fun!

What one piece of advice would you give to someone who is sitting on the sidelines and waiting? For you ladies of “mature years” don’t let your age paralyze you from coming to Boot Camp. It will change your life! You will have a blast in the process! When I started Boot Camp my goal was to get physically fit and to develop a healthy lifestyle. This is becoming such a part of me and it takes so much of the pressure off! It will take “diet” out of your vocabulary if you adopt a clean eating lifestyle. Adina provides the environment, education, and encouragement to learn and become the best that we can become! We start where we are to become the best that we can be! Make yourself a priority.
Don’t be afraid that you can’t do it! Yes you can! If I can do it, you can! I was diabetic and have normal blood sugar level now because of what I have accomplished at Boot Camp and through the Clean Eating lifestyle that I have adopted. My Dr. is thrilled! I am not perfect but I am still a work in progress. It takes time. It is hard and takes commitment and hard work but oh, it is so worth it. The sense of accomplishment after each workout is indescrible! I feel so accomplished. I haven’t felt this good in 25 years. I also haven’t weighed what I weigh now in 25 years. I decided to “run from” all of the “fad diets” The only results that they produce is eating weird food combinations and yo-yo dieting.
What one piece of advice would you give to someone who is in the process but is feeling discouraged? Have an accountability partner. It is encouraging and makes it fun. Debbie and I swap recipes, scold each other, push each other, encourage each other and more importantly love and pray for each other. Add new classes such as the TRX class. Get to know others in the classes. I have gotten to know some fantastic ladies, and yes some of them are much younger than me but you will see that age doesn’t matter. Your involvement and commitment to boot camp will minister to you not just physically but emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and socially which helps you to have a balanced life.
Anything else you would like to share? One of the benefits that I embrace is that I don’t have to “diet” again. It doesn’t mean that I don’t eat foods occasionally that I have given up. But the great thing about it is that I don’t jump on some “fad diet” out of guilt, I just go back to my normal way of healthy eating the next meal or the next day. I feel such freedom and no guilt. I feel great and as I said, I feel better than I have in 25 years. I am committed to going to my boot camp classes and to my TRX class. I hate it if I have to miss. It takes commitment and hard work. It is so worth it! I love it! I love Adina and the Coaches and for the part they play in my life of helping me to become the best that I can be! Make yourself a priority!
